Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 review: The best foldable phone

So, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 we have a fantastic combination of a smartphone and that with its price of nearly 2500$ is perfect for people in need of a phone as well as a tablet. It appears that the new Flex hinge, the thinner and lighter product and improved multitasking are all key enhancements. You also acquire improvements in performance and battery durability; however, it is more of an update rather than a giant leap, and the front display remains rather thin.

Pros

+New Flex hinge allowing the device to close flat
+Thinner and lighter design
+Improved multitasking
+Strong cameras
+Longer battery life

Cons

-Very expensive
-Front display still narrow
-Not dust resistant
-Slow 25W charging

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 review: Design and colors

On the design front, I have good news regarding the next Samsung Z Fold 5. Actually, it becomes easy to move around with in my front pocket as compared to the previous one I had. This thing is, in fact, less of a brick – not by much, but still, its weight is akin to that of the iPhone 14 Pro Max. But of course the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is even slimmer than the Z Fold 4 and the credit goes to the new Flex hinge which is a lot neater that one in Z Fold 4 and is constructed of fewer parts.

The end product is thus, a design that folds all the way flat to the point that there is no division at all between the two parts. And that is fine because there is an improved chance that small parts will not be trapped in there.

Other advantages of the Z Fold 5 are that it is slimmer and lighter than the Z Fold 4, it has a weight of 8.9 ounces vs 9.2 ounces. When closed, the Z Fold 5 has dimensions of 71.9 x 165.2 x 15.3 mm or 2.84 x 6.507 x 0.602 inches & 53 inches in thickness.

It measures twenty-four inches of width when opened, but only possesses a thickness of 0.62 and 0. But to develop a better understanding of the new generation, a comparison of its dimensions with those of the previous vehicle generation is helpful: New generation, 1825 mm; previous generation, 1725/1825 mm, depending on the modification.

The Google Pixel Fold is thinner still at 0.35 inches but tipping the scale at 10 ounces. The iPhone 14 Pro Max is 8.47 ounces. That is why the Z Fold 5 is IPX8 water resistant meaning that it is capable of operating in water to the depth of 1 meter 5 meters of freshwater for up to 30 minutes. Although the latest iPhone is tougher, and does hold up well to water and dust, it is not dust resistant.

Cameras

While having the same camera as the Z Fold 4, the image quality is better in some cases and it stands up to the Pixel Fold — save for the low light. The rear is equipped with an array of three cameras; a main sensor of 50 MP, an ultra-wide of 12 MP and a telephoto of 10 MP with 3x optical zoom.
You also have a 10MP selfie camera on the front, and a tiny, low-resolution under-display camera on the inner display. I would like the $1,799 flagship to have the same 200MP main camera as S23 ultra $1,199 and the same dual telephoto zoom but this could be one brilliant camera phone.

Performance

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is equipped with the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 as in the case of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, that means the results should be at least as good as those offered by the fastest Android smartphones. Its performance in realms of day-to-day usage was indeed fast and fluid: scrolling through a couple of Chrome tabs, or using two applications simultaneously to complete a task.

This flagship also did not struggle during heated games such as Call of Duty Mobile and Mortal Kombat. It was a quite fascinating experience, though sliding a finger across the crease a bit disrupted me. In its defense, it does so well as a gaming phone.

On the 3DMark Wild Life Unlimited test, the Galaxy Z Fold 5, thus, outperforms the iPhone 14 Pro Max with 81 fps to the latter’s 74. Once again, the Pixel Fold is not even close.

Battery life and charging

Having the same 4,400 mAh battery as the Galaxy Z Fold 4, it lasted more than 1 hour in tests. 5 hours more to its battery life on a single charge? And that is probably because the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip is employed much more efficiently in this particular handset.

Battery Life Comparison

Model Battery Life
Galaxy Z Fold 5 10:55
Galaxy Z Fold 4 9:17
Google Pixel Fold 10:21
